The Fungo di Borgotaro PGI refers to fresh and dried porcini mushrooms derived from spontaneous (forest) growth of the four varieties:
– Boletus aestivalis,
– Boletus pinophilus,
– Boletus aereus and
– Boletus edulis.
The production area of Fungo di Borgotaro PGI falls in the municipalities of Albareto, Borgo Val di Taro, Bedonia, Berceto, Compiano and Tornolo in the province of Parma, in the Emilia-Romagna region and in the municipalities of Pontremoli and Zeri in the province of Massa-Carrara, in the Tuscany region.
The Fungo di Borgotaro PGI has a rounded and fleshy shape, with a pleasant fungal smell and aromatic taste.
– The Boletus aestivalis has a more or less dark brown-red hat;
-the Boletus pinophilus of reddish-vinous brown garnet colour;
-the bronze-copper Boletus aereus;
-the Boletus edulis in color from creamy white to brown-chestnut and blackish-brown.
The diameter of the hat varies from a minimum of 20 up to over 30 cm.
The centuries-old silvicultural activity carried out in the production area positively influences the growth of the Fungo di Borgotaro PGI, the only quality brand mycete in Europe and the only product among fruit and vegetables not to be cultivated, giving organoleptic and quality characteristics that differentiate it from other mushrooms.
Borgo Val di Taro and its valleys are famous all over the world for its I.G.P. mushroom. The label was obtained in 1993 by the Ministry and in 1996 by the EEC
