The Malaspina Castle of Gambaro in the Municipality of Ferriere, was built by Ghisello, who had touched this portion of the family heritage.
In 1520 in this castle Ghisello, was assassinated by his relatives.
The Malaspina received the feudal investiture of Torrio (in Val d’Aveto) and Noceto (near Gambaro, in Val Nure) in 1423. Later this feud was commonly called the Edifizi, from the name of the place near Gambaro.
The manor remained in the hands of this Malaspina branch until 1624, to pass to the Ducal Chamber.
Ranuccio II Farnese enfeoffed in 1683 this farmhouse and its district to the counts Corrado and Ippolito Landi of the branch of Rivalta; in 1687 they obtained the title of marquises as a reward for the cession of Bardi and Compiano.
Gambaro became an important jurisdictional center on the border between Liguria and Piacenza.
The Landi of Rivalta held the castle until 1785 when it became the property of the Genoese Bacigalupi family and then the seat of the municipality.
The castle was also the residence of the commissioners of the States of Parma and Piacenza; Napoleon established his mairie there and later the dukes kept the town hall there.
In the second half of the sixties of the ‘900 the castle was unusable given the precariousness of the structures.
In 2007 the Alberoni family bought the property that was in a very compromised general state and, under the direction of the Superintendence of Architectural Heritage, since 2008 proceeds to an overall restoration completed in 2013.
