The history of Grazzano is linked for centuries to that of the Anguissola family, but it is Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone, a brilliant and cultured Milanese nobleman, who at the beginning of 1900 decided to create a picturesque village with a medieval appearance.
A rare example of revival architecture (in vogue in Europe between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries), combined with a passion for scenography and costume and love for traditions is what allows the visitor even today to feel catapulted back in time at least 700 years.
The center has a magical atmosphere given by the union of neo-medieval architecture and the accuracy of details and decorations that embellish every corner, making it unique.
From the parish church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, to the Museum of Wax and Torture, the entire town is worth a visit, if only for the houses with frescoed facades and paved streets.
Do not miss a visit to the Castle.
The construction of the castle dates back to 1395, when the Duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti decided to give it as a wedding gift to his sister Beatrice.
The turning point for the Castle of Grazzano, however, occurred with Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone, at the beginning of the ‘900. It was he who recovered this imposing building, intervening with extensive renovations. The castle was in fact in ruins, and being Giuseppe a lover of the arts engaged in its recovery.
Together with the architect Campanini he redesigned some structures, embellishing them and adding new rooms.
Very interesting is also the Castle Parka eclectic place, where different inspirations coexist harmoniously: the rational lines of the Italian garden and avenues coexist with the romantic atmosphere wooded areas, winding paths, fountains and marble statues that let themselves be covered by the caress of vines such as ivy, moss and roses.
