Excavation and research activities continue at Monte Sassoso di Ceriola di Carpineti, a place of great archaeological interest. During 2021, wall structures were brought to light, which can be interpreted as the foundations of a watchtower. Ceramic and metal materials were then recovered that have made it possible to date the historical settlement in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Given the strategic position of Monte Sassoso, the finds that are emerging suggest a fortified site used to control the Secchia valley floor. It will be the finds that will gradually emerge to tell the origins of the ancient fortress and its history of that era. Almost certainly the fortification served as an observatory of the Reggio Emilia-Modena border, but also as a point of resistance to possible attacks by enemies who, as happened, contended for the territory. The mayor of Carpineti, Tiziano Borghi, while following with interest this research curated by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, specifies: “I thank the CAI Reggiano for the right intuition and for the work carried out that led to this important discovery. I am happy that the works have been crowned with the success that adds historical value to the territory of Carpineti”.
