On the occasion of the celebrations of the 900th anniversary of the Antica Pieve di San Giorgio, the Vin Santo di Vigoleno DOC takes to the streets to tell its story and meet curious and enthusiasts. During the day of Monday 25 April, from 10 am to 6 pm, the wineries will set up small stands in the square of the fountain of Vigoleno, the beating heart of the village, where it will be possible to taste together with the producers themselves this particular and unique wine, exclusive and award-winning, a true niche of the Italian and international wine scene.
Raisin and aged wine, counted among the meditation wines, Vin Santo di Vigoleno has ancient origins to be found in the countryside of the Castle of Vigoleno. Since the fifteenth century the presence of a passito wine produced from Santa Maria et Melara vines is attested, today protected as ancient and native vines of the territory of Vigoleno, consumed by the Lords owners of the time, the Scotti, and on great religious occasions and the community. For centuries the production of this wine continued, started in the castle and handed down in the cellars of the territory once the aristocratic power was extinguished. In 1992 this raisin wine aged in barrels of other centuries became one of the denominations of controlled origin, fully inserting itself in the DOC protected by the Consorzio dei Vini Dei Colli Piacentini. To date, there are 7 wineries, with an average production per cellar of 500 bottles per year. Finding them all together, to taste the different expressions of this wine more unique than rare is an unmissable opportunity for enthusiasts and curious, enjoying a spring day in the medieval village of Vigoleno.
The tasting event is part of the calendar of celebrations for the 900th anniversary of the Diocese of Piacenza and the Pieve di San Giorgio which will open with the Solemn Mass of the patron saint of Vigoleno – San Giorgio – on Saturday 23 April. The cultural and experiential events will last throughout the weekend and will close with the tasting of Vin Santo di Vigoleno doc.
