In Monticello di Gazzola on April 16, 1945 a battle was fought between a small group of partisans barricaded in the castle and two companies of fighters of the Italian Social Republic.

After hours of resistance, the arrival of some teams from detachments of Val Luretta allowed the liberation of the partisans and the consequent retreat by the assailants.

The attack took place under the leadership of the Valiant, who was shot dead. brought to the castle and then to the farmhouse La Fragola, where he died.

Sunday, April 16, 2023, on the anniversary of the battle, inaugurates the path of freedom dedicated to the Valiant Commander. The trail retraces the last roads he trodden. The municipalities of Gazzola and Agazzano support a non-competitive walk of 8 km, of the “Lupi d’Appennino” Association.
