The Castle is located in the immediate vicinity of Casina, a hilly town about twenty km from Reggio Emilia along the state road 63. It can also be reached from Canossa by the provincial road 11 towards Sarzano and after about 1 km you reach the Rocca.
The most important monumental asset of the territory of Casina is the Castle of Sarzano, with the adjoining village, of which there is news in an ancient deed of sale of Azzo Adalberto, ancestor of the Countess Matilde, of 958.
The castle was placed to defend the road that climbed from Reggio Emilia to the passes for Tuscany.
The current structure with double walls, three courtyards, keep and square tower, dates back to the fifteenth century, at the time of the Marquis Nicolò III d’Este.
Of the ancient structure remain the high tower, used as a bell tower, the imposing keep, with Guelph battlements equipped with plumb and covered by a roof and the remains of the city walls.
The torrazzo is the most interesting element of the complex. The Castle of Sarzano, after an important restoration operation, is now a prestigious cultural container, full of events such as exhibitions, concerts, philosophical readings, theatrical performances that alternate during the year with success.
