To learn more: the guided tour
Accompanied by a guide, visitors will be able to discover the many events witnessed by the ancient stones of the Castle and all the details of the internal rooms of the fortress. The ancient walls of Contignaco have gone through ten centuries of history and, after their foundation in the eleventh century by the Pallavicino, they also belonged to the Aldighieri of Parma, a family related to the great poet of the Comedy, Dante Alighieri.
The guided tour will include the photographic exhibition Incanto Emiliano: a tribute to the beauty of the Emilian territory between images and emotions, which brings together various shots taken by Anna Lisa Inzaina.
The enigmas of the Castle
After the guided tour, guests can get started with the ancestral secrets of medieval cryptography.
It will first be presented what is now considered “the oldest cryptography manual of modern Western civilization”, or a manuscript of 1379 in which a cryptographer originally from Parma collected various “keys” to make encrypted messages used when princes, dukes and high prelates needed to communicate secretly with their adepts and their troops.
Using the original encryption systems of the fourteenth century, guests will have to solve the enigmas hidden in various coded messages hidden in some secret rooms of the Castle, open in an extraordinary way for this occasion, to be discovered between the darkness of the night and the soft light of candles. This short but intense experience will lead visitors to the solution of the final enigma and the conquest of the final prize.
The game, intended for adults, will also allow children to have fun.
The tasting
The evening will end with a guided tasting of the wines produced in the cellars of the fortress, during which the owners will expose the ancient history of the family business.
There are numerous wines of Contignaco, all obtained with ancient methods that enhance the flavor of the local tradition: the White Ignatius, the White Contignaci Turris, the White Gemma, the White Zelinda, the Red of the Sasso, the Red of the Rio dei Predoni, the Red Rubeum Durantis.
Since June 2021 the wines of Castello di Contignaco have been welcomed into the F.I.V.I. (Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers), a large family of winemakers that promotes the quality and authenticity of Italian wines.
Some tastings of Christmas sweets will accompany the tasting.
