«CYCLO-FÀ» CYCLO-FÀ COMPANY – CLOWN THEATRE

by and with Cristina Bisi and Diego Brocani

Monsieur Penombre an elegant grumbler romantically woos Madame Silhouette with serenades played with unusual musical instruments, giving her roses in balance and creating dreamlike situations to attract the attention of

Madame Silhouette a swanky lady of the Belle Epoque as petulant, but Very skilled with her tiny scissors to quickly cut out black paper shapes called silhouettes. The show “Le Cyclo-fa'” is the story of the romantic meeting of two artists and their journey through a language of other times with pre-cinema contraptions (kami-shibai, flipbook, silhouette cutting, thaumatrope, scanimation, zootrope), up to the big screen drawing on the poetry of Federico Fellini’s cinema Our show was born during the lockdown, in the period in which the whole world stopped. A useful break to focus on our artistic work: we built our Cyclo-fa’, a little bicycle and a little sofa, we built the pre-cinema contraptions, sewed our costumes and wrote the show in which the Cyclo-fa began to transport the characters in the wonderful “journey” of moving images.

This show “Le Cyclo-fa'”, which gives its name to the homonymous company, was born from the meeting between Diego Brocani and Cristina Bisi, both engaged for years in artistic fields offfDiego is trained in Afro-Cuban percussion, with study trips to Cuba and Brazil and during these trips he meets theater and becomes passionate about this world, remaining fascinated by the energy of the clown and undertakes the study, experimenting and traveling the world with his show. Cristina trained through artistic studies, then worked in editorial illustration, graphics, bodypainting and painting and then landed in the world of theater. Diego had the project to build a theater on wheels; while Cristina’s passion for silhouette cutouts and precinema has been deepened by studying the origins of this art, and building its various contraptions. Our desire is precisely to bring back to life these contraptions and the ancient techniques of optical illusions now forgotten, but which have an important place in history: they are at the origins of today’s cinema. We want to bring to light the amazement for “simple” things as it happened at that time: what for us today might seem trivial as the first sequence of projected images, at that time was an extraordinary innovation that opened the doors to cinematographic art.
