The Sprelle (spreli) are the dessert par excellence of the Carnival; A festival that, over the centuries, has always been deeply linked to the food aspect of rituality.
Tradition has it that, before Lenten deprivations, fats are consumed in abundance and the sprelle, fried in a large amount of lard, are abundantly rich.
During this period, sprelles can be found in almost all grocery stores, pastry shops and bakeries.
In small retailers (delicatessen and fresh pasta shops) the product is sold loose, by weight, or in rigid sealed containers so as not to damage the rather crumbly product.
